In Marysville we are collecting telephone books to help build homes for the homeless. The telephone books are processed, and used for insulation.
If you have any phone books to donate, let me know and I will pick them up between now and Thursday. They need to be collected and turned in by this Friday January 29th.

Take a Trip
My family just got back from a fantastic trip (retreat) to New York...all expense paid which was unbelievable. I now feel the need to spread the word about this organization because I know there are SO MANY families who would love to go on this retreat, too, if they only knew about it. They take care of every little detail and pamper and cater to you and your family the entire time, no cost to you and no strings attached. Seems almost too good to be true. What a blessing!!! It's intended for terminally ill patients with children under the ages of 18.

They said if there was enough response (families in need) on the west coast that they would bring the retreat to the Seattle area so patients & their families wouldn't have to travel so far. I knew you would be the perfect person to tell about it since you have so many contacts and probably know so many families who could really benefit from having a break from dealing with cancer but don't have the financial means for a family get-a-way.

Got Yarn?
The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance is collecting hand-made scarfs and hats for cancer patients. The items are given away, free of charge, to patients who need them. For the past year we have received emails from people who said they were willing to help knit and it has been wonderful. Two women volunteered to knit hats last year, and they haven't stopped. They just gave us 4 bags of hats and scarfs today to bring to Seattle.
Most of us aren't knitters, but if you have extra yarn laying around the house or are willing to purchase some yarn, we would be happy to collect it and ship it to their homes.

Give where you live
Adult and student volunteers have been working alongside each other to improve the Stanwood Camano community. Students who need community service hours for graduation, detention, or other organizations have been completing their hours with Project Serve. Students who complete their requirements or do not have any have been earning $8.50 an hour in a scholarship account that they may use for college, school trips, church camp, or other character-building endeavors.
Project Serve volunteers have spent the evening with guests at Warm Beach Senior Community singing and eating Hawaiian food, promoted the Soap Box Derby, helped an elderly woman trim a tree in her yard, served pancake breakfast at Stanwood Senior Center, painted Stanwood Elementary, put together health and school kits for Iraqi school children, put up, taken down, and checked lights at Warm Beach Camp, escorted guests from Josephine's through the Lights of Christmas, and other projects.
More and more students are getting involved and we are looking for adults to work alongside these awesome young people! Adult volunteers help lead students during the projects, giving encouragment and guidance. We have 70 students who are interested in learning more about you! We are asking adult volunteers to sign up for one 2-hour project every 3 months.

A Boy's Best Friend
Aaron is seven, adorable, and likes to run away. For any parents, having your seven year old run away can be scary but when your seven year old is autistic and can't speak, the "scariness" is multiplied. Aaron's mom emailed me asking for help. All she requested is that I link Aaron's Blog to this blog so others can track his progress. I think we can do better than that.
Aaron's family is raising $5,000 to buy Aaron a special service dog. The dog is being trained in Bellingham at Brigadoon Youth & Service Dogs. Since it's not possible for his parents to be with him every second, the service dog will ensure Aaron remains safe. Aaron currently has a tracking device on him so Search and Rescue can locate him when he runs away, but his friends and family are excited about the role his dog will play in not only his safety but also his development.
